Wanna Hear Some Good News?

August '17

The midlife journey can be a challenge — fraught with confusion and concern as you try to figure out what’s next. At times you may wonder if you’ll ever feel really great again. Happily, recent research suggests your mood will likely improve over the next 20 years.

A University of Melbourne study that followed more than 400 post menopausal women for 20 years found that women get happier as they age — especially in the years from 50 to 70. According to the author of the study, Kathleen Campbell, “The women in this study reported feeling more patient, less tense, and … tended to be less withdrawn as they entered their sixties.” Evidently part of this decrease in a depressive state of mind can be attributed to the fact that women get more “me” time at this stage of life as family and work demands decrease.

The study defined the qualities of this happier mood as confluence, optimism, self-esteem, self-efficacy, social support, social interest, freedom, energy, cheerfulness, and thought clarity. Now who doesn’t want more of that in the years head?

While we’re on a roll with good news, here’s some more. Yesterday a family member sent me a video of “20 good news stories you might have missed.” I had indeed missed 18 out of the 20. After watching this video, I found it so mood elevating I wanted to share it with you. Should you take the time to view it, do let me know if you feel better too. And, if you have any other good news to share, please do so!

Here’s the link to the video: https://www.interestingshit.com/nature/good-news-stories/amp/.

Keep an eye out for those happy headlines!
