Good Reads and A Special Summer Offer

June '14

Reading brings many joys; one of the greatest of these is an author surprise. I came across one last week when I was deep into the early pages of Jhumpa Lahiri’s latest book,”The Lowland”. The story began in Calcutta with an engaging tale of two brothers at play in the lowland. Just as I was becoming acclimated to the heat and steam of this far away land, I suddenly found myself back in the states – in Rhode Island – in a place literally 15 minutes down the road from me when I read her description of a wooden tower I have driven past hundreds of times.

Lahiri went on to capture another aspect of my daily life with her lyrical description of a blue heron like the ones I see so often out my back slider. Blending into the grass was a heron, close enough for Subhash to see the amber bead of its eye, its slate-colored body tinted with the afternoon light. Its neck settled into an S, the sharp length of the bill like the brass letter opener his parents had given him when he left India.

Lahiri is one of my favorite authors and last month I promised to compile your recommendations for summer reading. What follows is that list of beloved books – some new, and some tried and true. May you enjoy these good reads and find a surprise or two locked inside.

The Luminaries  ~  Eleanor Catton
“The Signature of All Things ~ Elizabeth Gilbert
Sea of Poppies & River of Smoke  ~  Amitav Ghosh
(the first two books in a trilogy)
And the Mountains Echoed ~  Khalid Hosseini
The Country of the Pointed Firs ~  Sarah Orne Jewett.
Help Thanks Wow! & Stitches  ~  Anne Lamott
Gift from the Sea ~  Anne Morrow Lindbergh
By the Light of the Moon  ~ Bunny McBride
Dear Life ~ Alice Monro
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks ~ Rebecca Skloot,
The Light Between Oceans ~  M.L. Stedman
The Goldfinch ~  Donna Tartt

The sheer pleasure of summer reading called to mind the more leisurely summer writing, so Id like to add a surprise of my own. While I usually offer a special price on my Midlife Journaling eCourse at the beginning of the year, the advent of summer seemed to be a perfect time to encourage you to write your way forward into finding more inside you. So from now until the end of July, the eCourse, “Reinvent Your Life ~ Write Now” will be available for $35 – a 25% discount from its usual cost of $47.00. Click here to take advantage of this offer and begin your summer journaling adventure.

Happy reading (and writing),
