Does Your Life Meet the “Goldilocks Test”?

July '12

Recently, NASA scientists announced the discovery of a “Goldilocks” planet, (Keppler 22B), which had just the right conditions to support life. That got me to thinking that a “Goldilock’s Test” would be a great way to assess your own life conditions. In other words, to determine the necessary elements to support a life that’s “just right” for you.

If you are not familiar with the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, it goes like this. Once upon a time there was a lass named Goldilocks (for her adorable blond tresses), who ambled into a charming cottage owned by three bears, while they were out – presumably enjoying themselves elsewhere. In a rather unabashed manner, Goldilocks proceeded to sample their bowls of porridge, their chairs and even their beds until she located the ones that were ‘just right’ for her. In fact when she reached the bedroom and checked out the Baby Bear’s bed, she was so comfortable she promptly fell asleep.

I’ll get to the end of the story shortly, but before I do let’s apply the “Goldilocks Test” to your own life. As a subscriber of Midlife Discovery, you already own just what you need to do this, because you received the “Midlife Inventory,” as a bonus when you subscribed. Rather that asking you to unearth it, however, I have included a shorter version below.

Midlife Inventory

Using the center of the circle as the lowest ranking (0) and the outer edge as the highest ranking (10), rate your level of satisfaction for each segment of your life by drawing a line at that numerical level across the “wedge”.

Now that you rated each segment of your life, you can embark on the “Goldilocks Test.” For each section, simply ask yourself, What is needed to make this area of my life ‘just right’ for me?

You may be surprised by the answers you receive – just the way Goldilocks was  when the bears came home. Yes, those three bears returned from their time away and woke her up as the Baby Bear exclaimed, “Someone’s been sleeping in my bed and here she is!”  At which point Goldilocks lept out of bed, ran out the door and never visited that cute little house in the woods again.

Hopefully, you won’t run away the way Goldilocks did when you find unexpected answers, because the knowledge you uncover is invaluable. One of your responses may well point to an area that warrants your attention. And you may even be able to manifest what you need to make that segment of your life ‘just right.’

The “Midlife Inventory” is a favorite of mine and can be used in many different ways, as you will see in my forthcoming guided, journaling program, Reinvent Your Life – Write Now. (I’m planning to launch this program in early fall.)

Meanwhile, let’s hear about your experience with the “Goldilocks Test.” Did you try it? What happened? Did a specific result surprise you?  Did you find any clues for where you would like to focus your energy? I’d love to know.

Enjoy these magical summer days!

Wow! I guess I am pretty lucky!!! When I looked at the chart, the two things that stood out were career (mine has finished successfully) and personal growth. I thought that I was short on the personal growth and then I realized that I am still taking piano lessons and the music I coax from the piano is a lot better than the music I produced 8 or 10 years ago. So everything is “just right”. And I don’t need to run out of the house – because it’s MY home, not the three bears’ home.
